**English version of the article at the bottom**

  • Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot
  • Good Morning Spider
  • It’s a Wonderful Life
  • Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain

Selecciones:

Nivel de coincidencia entre John y Bola: 40%

Disco con más seleccionado por John: Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot

Disco con más seleccionado por Bola: Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain

Reflexiones:

John: “He got dragged by a donkey / Through the dust and the myrtle / But he was once a little fat baby” de “Little Fat Baby”

Bola: “The owls have been talking to me / But I’m sworn to secrecy” de “Spirit Ditch”

  • Selección más sencilla:

John: “Shade and Honey”

Bola: “Sunshine”

  • Selección más complicada:

John: ¡Todas!

Bola: “Maria’s Little Elbows”.

************************************************************************

In January, I presented a particular way to create definitive compilations of a given artist, following a series of rules that make the process, not only entertaining, but it also forces us a little bit to be aware of each track and its weight in the discography that you are working with. To see the process and rules, using The Smiths as an example click here. To see the compilations we have made so far, here they are: Pavement, Sui Generis, Oasis.

This time the chosen band to be compiled is Sparklehorse, and joining me in this exercise is John Lutkevich, the man behind Soft Fangs; a great band from New York who creates acoustic based songs with a little touch of distorted shoegaze.

This month we did the exercise a little different and it was our guest who propose the band to work with. During my communication with John it was clear that he really likes Mark Linkous’ music and particularly Sparklehorse. For me it was specially interesting to dive into a band that I only knew superficially and that now has me as a fan, I found a band to enjoy that resembles me of artists that I really love like Pavement, Yo La Tengo or Daniel Johnston ¡Thanks John!

Here are the results.

Albums used for the exercise:

  • Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot
  • Good Morning Spider
  • It’s a Wonderful Life
  • Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain

Number of tracks for the compilation according to the album average: 15

Selections:

Level of coincidence between John and Bola: 40%

Album with the most number of selections from John: Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot

Album with the most number of selections from Bola: Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain

Reflections:

  • What is your relationship with Sparklehorse?

John: Sparklehorse is one of my absolute favorite artists of all time. From the moment I heard Mark’s music I was entranced. There was something completely original and strange about it, yet it resonated with me the way some people talk about classic rock. His lyrics always struck me in such a simple and beautiful way, and I was very inspired by how much care he put into all of his albums.

Bola: I basically knew Sparklehorse for their album with Dangermouse, collaborating with artists like Gruff Rhys, Iggy Pop, David Lynch or Black Francis among others… and I knew Mark Linkous more because of his mythical figure than for his music. For this reason I entered their discography with fresh ears, which made the exercise very interesting.

  • What fragment of lyrics do you think that defines what Sparklehorse is?

John: “He got dragged by a donkey / Through the dust and the myrtle / But he was once a little fat baby” from “Little Fat Baby”

Bola: The owls have been talking to me / But I’m sworn to secrecy” from “Spirit Ditch”

  • Easiest track to choose?

John: “Shade and Honey”

Bola: “Sunshine”

  • Hardest track to choose?

John: All of them!

Bola: “Maria’s Little Elbows”. Both “Most Beautiful Widow in Town” and “Knives of Summertime” were in the list right up ‘till the final list.

  • Most painful sacrifice?

John: “Sunshine” was pretty tough to let go of, but sacrificing “Morning Hollow” was definitely the most painful. However, I feel like “More Yellow Birds” flows better with the overall compilation.

Bola: “Rainmaker”… also “Cruel Sun” a fast track that caught me from the first listen.

  • Approximate number of changes to reach the definitive list?

John: Definitely 4 or 5, after much deliberation and moral support from my partner.

Bola: 4, I had to change it a few times in order to define some songs.

  • Final impressions of the exercise?

John: This was such a fun and tough exercise, especially with an artist whom I love all of their albums. It should be a mandatory exercise for all schools.

Bola: After the first few listens that I gave to the albums, I thought that most of my selections would come from the Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot album, however, once I started to create the compilation, the tracks started to level out one by one, thing that indicates me that the discography is very solid and even.

Here’s the definitive compilation created by John, Enjoy!
